May 31st: Hello, San Diego!

Another month, another trip! This time Mark and I were heading out to San Diego to visit one of our friends, Jen. She used to work with us in Virginia but she transferred out to California last summer. We were really looking forward to catching up with her again! We got up early, drove to Dulles, and were on our way.

The flight was uneventful, and the pilots even turned on the ATC channel! I knew we were getting closer when we started to fly over big stretches of desert.

Short final to SAN. I didn't realize just how close the airport was to everything!

We met up with Jen and her buddy Mike, a pilot from Canada who was also visiting for a few days. It was so nice to see her again! We threw our stuff in her car and made our way over to the San Diego Convention Center for our first stop of the trip...the race expo for the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon! We were all going to run the half marathon the next morning, so we picked up our bibs and race packets, made our way through the section of somewhat overpriced clothing, then spent some time eating our way through the race expo. I didn't remember to grab a picture...I was pretty hungry because I hadn't eaten since breakfast in Virginia, so I was pretty busy stuffing my face on all the free samples.

We eventually made our way through the expo, then walked down to the Gaslamp District and grabbed some lunch at a little gelato/panini/coffee shop. We grabbed a couple souvenirs at a nearby shop, then hopped back in the car.

I honestly can't remember where this was, but it sure was pretty! It may have been either Harbor or Shelter Island.

The weather was insanely nice. I can definitely understand why people want to live here!

We stopped back at Jen's condo to drop off our bags and say hi to her mom and her dogs, then hopped right back in the car for our next stop of the day: SoCal TRACON! Jen works the arrivals for LAX, and it was neat to get to see her area and how the building and airspace is set up. We hung out at the TRACON for a little while, then drove back to San Diego and met up with her boyfriend, Charlie, for dinner. By the time we finished we were pretty tired (and we all had a race to run in the morning), so we went back to Jen's and called it a night.

Don't be fooled by my lack of pictures in this post...I'll more than make up for it in the next few!
