Picture of the Day: August 30

Mark had to work today, but since the weather was nice we decided to squeeze a short hike in before sunset. We decided to check out the Pocosin Mission, a 1.9 mile easy round trip hike that takes you to the ruins of an Episcopal mission. But first, we came upon a cabin that PATC maintains and apparently rents out. It seems to be in decent shape, but I'm not sure I'd want to rent it as a relaxing getaway!

After an easy hike along a fire road, we came to the ruins. The steps to the church are still there, but not much else!

We found a pile of artifacts that had been piled against a tree.

This is the most intact part of the ruins. It's not easy to find information about what the mission was like, but I believe it was established in 1904.

I'm guessing homeowner's insurance isn't going to cover that. :)

A small part of the church wall is still standing, though the chimney fell down.
